Description
The Chemistry Department of Fergusson College started in 1894-95. This is one of the largest science departments of the college and Deccan Education Society, Pune. In its history of 122 years it has grown considera-bly.
About Organic Chemistry:
M.Sc. Organic was started in year 1994 which contributed to the development of the department. It is a full time course of four semesters.
Organic chemistry is the study of the structure, properties, composition, re-actions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds, which include not only hydrocarbons but also com-pounds with any number of other ele-ments, including hydrogen (most com-pounds contain at least one carbon–hydrogen bond), nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, and sul-fur. This branch of chemistry was origi-nally limited to compounds produced by living organisms but has been broadened to include human-made substances such as plastics. The range of application of organic compounds is enormous and also includes, but is not limited to, pharmaceuticals, petro-chemicals, food, explosives, paints, and cosmetics. The intake capacity of this course is 48.
About M.Sc. Biochemistry:
In the year 2007 non-grant post graduate course in Biochemistry was started in the department.
Biochemistry is a branch of science which helps one to understand the basic and internal chemistry of living things. Since it is so vast and new phenomenon are discovered every year, it is taught as a separate branch of biology. Biochemists combine the fields of microbiology, cell biology, genetics, neurochemistry, immu-nology, clinical chemistry, biophysical techniques, toxicology, molecular biology and physiology to understand all the chemical reactions happening at cellu-lar or molecular level in a living cell or liv-ing being. Biochemistry in general deals with bio molecules like enzymes, hor-mones, carbohydrates, amino acids, fats, proteins, DNA, RNA, pigments etc.It de-scribes their origin, formation, func-tion, metabolism, deficiency symptoms etc. Biochemists are contributing to advances in a wide variety of areas, including health, agriculture and the environment.
About Analytical Chemistry:
M.Sc. Analytical was started in year 2007 which contributed to the development of the department. It is a full time course of four semesters.
Analytical chemistry is the science of obtaining, processing, and communicat-ing information about the composition and structure of matter. In other words, it is the art and science of determining what matter is and how much of it exists. Analytical chemists use their knowl-edge of chem-istry, instru-mentation, computers, and statistics to solve problems in almost all areas of chemistry and for all kinds of industries. They conduct basic laboratory research; perform process and product develop-ment; design instruments used in analyti-cal analysis; teach; and work in marketing and law. Analytical chemistry can be a challenging profession that makes signifi-cant contributions to many fields of sci-ence. They have opportunities in Indus-tries, Food and Technology, Forensic Labs , Pharmaceuticals and many more.
