About IAMS

The discoveries over the last few decades have established microbiology as a very important scientific discipline because of its practical implications in agriculture, medicine, environment, industry, genetic engineering and other fields. It is now clear that the role of microbe in nature is all encompassing. However, major challenges that lay ahead are to impart broad and state of art training to enable the next generation of microbiologists, and to educate the public and government representatives about the continued and critical importance of this field for health, environment and economy. With this vision in 2012 “Indian Academy of Microbiological Sciences (IAMS)” was founded under the aegis of Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI) whose mission is to Popularization and strengthening of microbiological sciences in India

AMI Pune Unit

City based microbiologists and the researchers were amongst few distinguish members of the Pune Unit who were the driving force behind the unit in 80’s and 90’s. Then the office of AMI Pune Unit was with B J Medical College & National Institute of Virology. Later on in late 90’s the office was shifted to University of Pune. In past two decades it has moved to National Chemical Laboratory and Agharkar Research Institute. In 2007 the unit was revived by the efforts of Dr. M V Deshpande (NCL), Dr. Yogesh Shouche (NCCS) & Prof. R. L. Deopurkar (UoP). Their efforts were largely supported by faculty members across the city, students and scientists and not to forget the industry sector as well. Hi-tech Biosciences, Hi Media, Kanbiosis and Hindustan Antibiotics are the few among the long list patrons of AMI Pune Unit.  Ever since the revival, Unit office is being hosted by Department of Microbiology at Abasaheb Garware College.
